They like me! They really like me!

I haven't been able to go on the kayak but have gone to the pier a few times. Yesterday I resolved to try one of the cedar "beauties" and it worked great. as you can see below. The lure swims amazingly well, even being pulled from the pier which is about 10-12 feet high. I can see how it will definitely catch fish; besides this one, there were many of other fish that kept missing it.
I am very happy with the results, this is the reason I started making this lures. I was looking for something that worked as well or better than the lures I bought. The two pictures are of the same fish, I took it twice with cell phone  because of the sun. I couldn't see the screen.

Cedar beauties

It looks like these lures will be my signature lures.  I like the simplicity of their look and the ease of making them. They look and swim great. I haven't seriously tested them on the kayak but that will hopefully happen soon. I have taken them to the pier and had some followers including one big fish.

Cut and ready to be shaped.

Completed from last post "Natural Lures"

Took inspiration from Lure Foundry (works of art) and made a more natural lure. I also made them this way because the last lures I made did not do too well with the toothy critters that inhabit the Florida reefs.
They will hopefully be sturdier. I did not use foil or epoxy, the coating is simply super glue which soaks into the cedar and seals it. I also used stronger split rings because the last ones were all bent out of shape literally. The black on top was achieved by burning the wood carefully with a small torch. I have tested their swim abilities in the lake behind my house and they did pretty well. I will take them out for a true test and post the results.

Lure results

These are some of the fish I caught last friday on a reef trip. Stayed closer to shore because of the north winds produced by a cold front. Used one of the lures and managed to catch a nice mackerel but then two big lizard fish just destroyed it. I switched to jigs and managed to catch the other five macs and a bar jack.

My set up.

My trusty Ugly Sticks and Penns.

Improved lures

Trying to improve my lures the first ones were destroyed by Macs, Trigger fish and two big Lizard  fish. The coating of epoxy needs to be thicker around the foil and the split rings stronger, maybe ill try some different pattern on these.

1. Cut shape on cedar.

 2. Make groove for thruwire with dremmel or saw.

 3. Shape wire and secure it with thread and superglue.

I still need to shape the lures , I will post that when done..

Fish Caught With Lures

On Friday I went out fishing with my friend Jimmy on our kayaks. I gave him one of the lures I made the day before, and he said he would troll it on the way out. He did, and managed to catch a nice spanish mackerel and a trigger fish. I caught some blue runners and a small trigger but no keepers.
